The search is on for two new apprentices

Wyevale Nurseries nurseries have announced this month (August 2018) that it is looking for two new apprentices.

Wyevale Nurseries in Hereford is calling for people to apply for its two-year Horticultural Apprenticeship, which will start in September 2018.

Andy Johnson, Managing Director at Wyevale Nurseries, said:

“This September will be our fifth intake of two new candidates to the current apprenticeship scheme, which is part of a specifically designed National Apprenticeship Programme for the Midland Regional Growers (MRG) in conjunction with Pershore College. As a company, we are keen to encourage young people into the horticulture industry. We believe in giving opportunities to young and enthusiastic people, with the aim of developing them towards a great career within the industry. Apprenticeships allow young people to learn on the job, achieve nationally recognised qualifications and earn money. We offer an opportunity to work with one of the top commercial nurseries in the UK and gain qualifications, as well as becoming part of a forward-thinking company and join a dedicated and friendly team.”

The two-year horticultural apprenticeship roles will be based at Wyevale Nurseries working on different nursery departments. Additional training would be provided at Pershore College during the apprenticeship. Successful applicants will be progressing towards a Level 3 Diploma in Production Horticulture.

Applicants must be 16-years-old or above. There will be an induction period prior to the start date, and the apprenticeship is for two years, starting in September 2018.

Seventeen-year-old Sam Lloyd is currently a first-year apprentice at Wyevale Nurseries.

Sam said:

“I’m really enjoying it and gaining knowledge and experience in horticulture. I get to rotate departments every three to four months and will work in every department during the apprenticeship. I would definitely love to stay here or gain further education within the industry.”

Carla Nash completed her apprenticeship in 2016 with Wyevale Nurseries and now has a permanent position with the company as a Team Leader on the Moving Crew.

The 25-year-old explained: Wyevale Nurseries

“During the apprenticeship, I learned a great deal about hardy nursery stock production and despatch from lots of different angles. Attending college has been a great experience, allowing me to interact with other people of a similar age who have a shared interest in horticulture. All too often, horticulture is viewed as an ‘older persons’ topic, yet many young people have a real passion for it. During the whole course, I was constantly learning.”

Successful applicants of the two-year horticultural apprenticeship will be paid at the National Minimum wage and Wyevale Nurseries will fund any training.
