Tatton Park recreates A’maze’ing Historic Maze for RHS Flower Show

One of the most anticipated horticultural events of the year, the RHS Flower Show took place at Tatton Park, from 19 - 23 July 2017. For its own show feature, Tatton Park built a recreation of one of its earliest and most popular Garden features – the Tatton Maze – complete with a host of secret treasures, such as a 200 million year old meteorite, a priceless seventeenth century Van Dyck painting and lots more.

Tatton Park recreates – the Tatton Maze for RHS Flower Show

Established by the 1790s, the Garden Maze was built out of hornbeam and in its centre lives the Green Man, which was sculpted out of an existing tree a decade ago.  This central figure holds a compass and was inspired by the four corners of the globe as well as the travels of the last Lord Egerton, who passed away in 1958. He also exemplifies the wonderful and diverse collection of plants in Tatton’s enchanting  50 acres of garden.

Adults and children alike are invited on a voyage of discovery as untold tales of Tatton Park will be weaved throughout the maze - part of the Park’s current Secret Stories campaign. The year-long campaign tells the stories of some of Tatton’s most hidden treasures and secluded places. Can you spot the meteorite Lord Egerton collected in Namibia or the Anthony Van Dyck painting – from Tatton’s extensive collection of art? Discover photos of some of Tatton Park’s famous visitors and an area inspired by Tatton’s internationally acclaimed Japanese Gardens.

Simon Tetlow, Head Gardener at Tatton Park said: “Every year we look forward to the RHS Flower Show, as we work together to create a show piece for Tatton Park. This year we were inspired by the original maze and our Secret Stories campaign. We wanted to create something interactive and engaging for visitors. Each of the items hidden within will highlight secret stories of some of the people, places, treasures and animals who feature at Tatton.”

“The maze is so much more than something great for the eye, it takes you on a journey.”
