The British lawnmowing season is officially changing. Leading lawnmower manufacturer Cub Cadet highlights this shift with the first-year-on-year comparison of data (2017 and 2018), published today. The information collected by the company is part of a five-year survey to accurately plot how the changing weather patterns are impacting grass growth and lawnmowing activity in the UK.
Gardeners were encouraged to enter their first and last mowing dates. The figures provided by almost 100 gardeners in the UK showed that on average their mowing season was 227 days in 2018 compared to 233 in the previous year.
The most popular week for gardeners to begin mowing was 26th March 2018 and the most popular week for a final cut before winter was across two weeks, week commencing the 5th and 12th November 2018.
Retail success stories seldom hit the headlines with the UK gripped by Brexit jitters – but the nation’s garden centres are riding on the crest of a wave. While Britain’s High Streets are facing economic headwinds that have seen big name retailers consigned to history, garden centres are bucking the trend and experiencing healthy levels of growth.
According to the Horticultural Trades Association, the UK garden market is worth around £5.7billion (excluding landscaping and amenity) and business is booming for the UK’s 2,300 garden centres and retail nurseries.
The January 2019 issue of HTA Market Update found that garden centre sales were up by 3% in 2018 compared to 2017. Houseplants were star performers, up by 15% year-on-year. Christmas categories saw strong growth in 2018 with December sales 9% up on 2017.

GARDEN centres across the country saw a positive start to the year (January, 2019) according to the Garden Centre Association’s (GCA) Barometer of Trade (BoT) report with houseplant and outdoor plant sales dominating.
Compared to the same month the previous year (2018), houseplant sales were 16.96% up and outdoor plant sales were up 13.03%.
Iain Wylie, GCA Chief Executive, said: “Towards the end of 2018, we saw much milder weather than we’re used to and our customers were able to spend more time outdoors preparing their beds and plots for the coming season. This continued into January with good sales in outdoor plants and houseplants bringing a positive start to the year and the expectation of a buoyant spring season.”
Seed and bulb sales were up 5.32% and sales in garden sundries were up 9.02%.
