Get your garden ready for a May bank holiday bonanza

The experts at UK gardening superbrand Flymo shares some handy hints and tips to create your very own outdoor haven, just in time for the Bank Holiday weekend.

A pre-cut clean up

The first job to tackle to help bring the garden to life is to begin with a good tidy. It’s important to start with a blank canvas, so begin by clearing out any unwanted debris and leaves from the lawn. This will make it easier to whizz around with the lawnmower before guests arrive and avoid damaging the mower blade. Using a garden vacuum, such as Flymo’s GardenVac 2700, makes light work of the task and will turn the debris into mulch to use throughout season.

FlymoSelecting the right tool for the job

A hover mower such as Flymo’s Glider Compact 330VC floats on a cushion of air, making it lightweight and easy to manoeuvre around small to medium size lawns. Rotary mowers including Flymo’s Mighti-Mo 300 Li are suitable for most types of gardens. Lightweight, compact and quiet, with the capacity to effortlessly mow a lawn up to the size of a tennis court on a single charge, the Mighti-Mo 300 Li is a surprisingly powerful 40V* wheeled lawnmower that uses a rechargeable, interchangeable Lithium-Ion battery.

The grass rules

When cutting the lawn, always remember to follow the one third rule; never cut more than a third of the blade of grass in one go, as this can stress the grass resulting in an unhealthy lawn. Cutting with the blade too short and too fast is known as ‘scalping’ which can lead to disease and weed infestation. Instead gradually reduce the grass length over a number of weeks to reach the desired length.

Avoid watering the lawn immediately after mowing. The best time to give the grass a hose down is first thing in the morning when the air is cool and the water has time to travel to the roots – plus guests won’t want to stand or dance on a soggy lawn!

Contour the gardenFlymo

Ensure borders are neat, tidy and straight by defining the lawn edges. Overgrown edges can look unsightly and can mean time and effort spent working in the garden has been in vain. Flymo’s Contour Cordless 24V offers cordless trimming up to the size of two football pitches on a single charge making it ideal for a garden of any shape and size.

Time for a trim

As the weather starts to get a little warmer, your garden will spring into life again making it the perfect time to take on any overgrown hedges and bushes. Flymo’s EasiCut 610XT is a powerful corded hedge trimmer that has an extended reach handle, allowing you to cut tall hedges and bushes with ease from the safety of the ground.

Keep little ones entertained

Make use of any unused space in the garden over the long weekend by turning it into clever entertaining areas. Whether it’s a secret hideaway, fairytale castle or pirate ship, building a den is a great base for kids to play with friends, listen to music or read a book. Another fun idea is to transform the garden into a bowling alley or a giant Twister board, something a little different that the whole family can enjoy together.

Last minute soiree

If neighbours tend to arrive for an impromptu barbeque or outdoor gathering and the lawn is in need of a trim, fear not. A once time consuming and labouring task is now a thing of the past thanks to the Flymo 1200 R robotic lawnmower. The device makes its way around the garden, trimming the grass without human intervention. Simply place the charging station in a suitable spot, set the boundary wire around the designated area and let it do its job.
